Fall 2011 Schedules

Rugby Pitch Questionnaire Results

41st Canceled.

Co-Wreck Director Michelle Williams apparently made an "executive decision" that there would be no game allowed on University grounds for Purdue varsity rugby vs. IU, Purdue Women's rugby game, and/or Purdue/IU Alumni game (despite travel plans by many alums for the event). One excuse she used was that it would be too dangerous to play on the puddled grounds. Of course, we know that would actually be safer than the brick pitch of late summer or other dry times. At other times it was that the grounds would be damaged.

The person directly in charge Club Sports and the on that made the 'Executive Decision' and then the chain of command:

RIP: Jeff Wojahn

From the Men's Alumni Mailing List:

I'm sure some of you remember Jeff Wojahn. He was my roomate in 78 and 79. He and I joined Purdue Rugby together. He was a big fellow who I believe played either prop or second row. In the old photos posted, I saw several which he was in. He took a real interest in rugby particularly the extra curricular side and become a big drinking buddy of Catfish. He went on the trip to the Mardi Gras tournament where someone fail off the top of the RV while driving down the highway. On the way back they got snowed into a small town for several day. After leaving Purdue, he headed to Houston, joined a club there and later got married. Then in 1985 while playing in a match in Houston, he collapsed on the pitch and didn't survive. It's an awfully young age to be going down, but I do admire how he did with his boots on.

Anyways, I wanted to mention it so he's not forgotten.

Fall Seasons Begin.

"In our country, true teams rarely exist . . . social barriers and personal ambitions have reduced athletes to dissolute cliques or individuals thrown together for mutual profit . . . Yet these rugby players. with their muddied, cracked bodies, are struggling to hold onto a sense of humanity that we in America have lost and are unlikely to regain. The game may only be to move a ball forward on a dirt field, but the task can be accomplished with an unshackled joy and its memories will be a permanent delight. The women and men who play on that rugby field are more alive than too many of us will ever be. The foolish emptiness we think we perceive in their existence is only our own."
Victor Cahn

40th Wrapup

Ladies and gentlemen of Purdue Rugby.

In addition to being an artistic success, the Purdue Alumni Reunion has met,
and thanks to generous sponsorships and on the spot donations, exceeded its
fundraising goals. We will give a full accounting when all the bills are
paid, the last jersey orders filled, and a few receipts and promised
donations are collected. We will publicize large donations if the ruggers
involved do not protest.

We will purchase for the college mens' team
23 "A" jerseys from Canterbury, J. Ianson on the sleeve. Approx $1600
22 "B" Jerseys. $1000

For the College Women's team
23 "A" Jerseys $1600

A $500 Spirit award will be made to the College Women's team. We propose
that their be an annual "Spirit" award.for the team most active in planning
and participation in the Alumni weekend.

$1500 will be donated to the Timmy Foundation to assist children in need to
have operations. 80's stalwart Chuck Deitzen runs the foundation and donates
much of his time to good works. Chuck deserves a "best dressed" award for
his weekend, though I cannot decide which costume is best.

We estimate that there will be more money available. We may keep a starter
fund to assist next years alumni match. We hope to build towards the next
big one in five years by having a well attended Alumni weekend every year.
We will suggest to the Current team that they reserve the first weekend of
May every year for Alumni.
